He went to college at Wake Forest College in Winston-Salem where he graduated with honors in 1911. In 1913 Franklin married his high school sweetheart, Maud Butler Gillette, and began teaching at Wake Forest High School. In 1914 Franklin became principal of the high school and continued teaching there until he retired in 1940.

During World War I he served as an artillery officer at Camp Gordon in Athens, Georgia. After the war he became principal of his old high school in Raleigh until his retirement in 1942.
